Jewelry Care

Proper care ensures your jewelry maintains its beauty for generations to come.

Maintaining the brilliance and structural integrity of your jewelry requires a combination of mindful wearing, safe storage, and regular cleaning. Whether it is a daily staple or a cherished heirloom, follow these guidelines to keep your pieces looking pristine.

1. Daily Wear & Protection

Jewelry is delicate and susceptible to damage from chemicals and physical impact.

  • The "Last On, First Off" Rule: Apply lotions, perfumes, and hairsprays before putting on your jewelry. Chemicals in these products can dull the surface of gold and damage porous gemstones like pearls or emeralds.
  • Avoid Harsh Environments: Remove jewelry before swimming in chlorinated pools or using household cleaning agents (like bleach), which can permanently discolor metals and erode finishes.
  • High-Impact Activities: Take off rings and bracelets before hitting the gym, gardening, or engaging in heavy lifting to prevent scratching or bending the setting.

2. Cleaning at Home

For most gold and diamond jewelry, a simple at-home cleaning can restore significant luster.

  • The Gentle Method: Soak jewelry in a bowl of warm water mixed with a few drops of mild, grease-cutting dish soap for 20–30 minutes.
  • The Tools: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush (preferably a baby toothbrush) to gently scrub under the stones and around the prongs where oils and dirt collect.
  • Drying: Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat dry with a lint-free soft cloth. Avoid using paper towels, which can cause micro-scratches.

Note on Fragile Stones: Emeralds, opals, and pearls require specialized care. Never use ultrasonic cleaners or steam on these stones, as the vibration or heat can cause them to crack or lose their luster.

3. Proper Storage

How you store your jewelry is just as important as how you wear it.

  • Individual Compartments: Prevent "jewelry tangles" and scratches by storing pieces separately. Diamonds are the hardest natural substance and can easily scratch other gemstones and metals.
  • Soft Linings: Use a fabric-lined jewelry box or individual microfiber pouches.
  • Anti-Tarnish Strips: For silver jewelry, include anti-tarnish strips or silica gel packets in your storage container to absorb moisture and slow down oxidation.

4. Professional Maintenance

Even with perfect home care, professional check-ups are essential for longevity.

  • Prong Inspection: Every 6–12 months, have a jeweler check the prongs on your rings to ensure stones aren't loose.
  • Professional Deep Clean: Jewelers use ultrasonic and steam cleaners that reach crevices a toothbrush cannot.
  • Re-tipping and Polishing: Over time, gold prongs wear down. A jeweler can "re-tip" them to keep your stones secure and polish out surface scratches to restore a mirror-like finish.
